Russia, possibly exclusion from FIBA competitions

Russia will be out of FIBA competitions if they don’t redefine their criteria to host a Russian league to use, according to the website Sport24.

Last season the Russian competition was merged with the VTB League, that encompasses several countries such as Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania. Thus, the top-ranked Russian team in this international competition was proclaimed champion, as it has happened with CSKA Moscow.

Patrick Baumann, president of the worldwide organization, has sent a letter to the Russian Federation threatening severe penalties so means a formula beyond legality. Such sanctions would exclude all Russian selections from FIBA competitions, although it remains to be seen if, as speculated Lithuanian web Krepsinis such sanctions also affect the presence of Russian clubs in Euroleague and Eurocup.

The deadline is Monday at noon and requires a change in the rules, just hours after the Lithuanian and Ukrainian teams withdrew from the VTB League.
